What is Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)?

Mounjaro is an injectable medicine initially used to treat type 2 diabetes but is now also used for weight management. An injectable medicine, Mounjaro ranges in doses from 2.5mg to 15mg, administered once weekly.

Mounjaro was approved for use in weight loss by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in November 2023. This essentially confirms the necessary investigations have been carried out, assessing safety and effectiveness.

How Does the Mounjaro Pen Work for Weight Loss?

Tirzepatide mimics two naturally occurring hormones in the body. The first of these is glucose insulinotropic polypeptide or GIP. When released in the small intestine, GIP stimulates insulin release which helps to keep blood sugar levels low after eating, thus improving blood sugar control.

The natural rhythm of the body is to release GIP in response to a meal that is high in fat or sugar, but this drops quickly. Tirzepatide allows for GIP to stay around for longer, triggering greater insulin release.

The second hormone Tirzepatide mimics is the glucagon-like peptide-1 or GLP-1. This also stimulates insulin release but additionally acts in the brain to make you feel fuller for longer. It also slows the emptying of the stomach. In doing so, this leads to a reduced food intake, helping support weight loss.

Tirzepatide is the first weight loss medication which activates both of these pathways and when compared to other weight loss injections such as Wegovy, it may produce greater weight loss.

Who Should Consider Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is indicated for weight management alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity in patients with:

• A BMI of 30 or greater

• BMI of 27 or more with at least one weight-related health problem such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea.

This means you should have tried to lose weight through exercise and dietary changes first, and should continue to follow a healthy diet and regular exercise regime whilst taking the medication.

Mounjaro can also be prescribed by a doctor for type 2 diabetes management. Usually, Mounjaro is reserved for diabetic individuals who are struggling to manage their blood sugar levels with other drugs or can't take certain diabetes medications. This must be carefully monitored and therefore not all online doctor clinics may prescribe for this indication. In diabetic patients, Mounjaro may lead to complications such as diabetic retinopathy.

Mounjaro isn't suitable for everyone, including individuals who:

• Are allergic to the drug or any ingredient contained within the pen

• Are pregnant or breastfeeding

• Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2 (MEN 2)
